Giving a Wheelchair a Pair of “Eyes”
For some people, a wheelchair can become a barrier that confines them to their homes, distancing them from everyday destinations such as the market, the park, and even the simple routine of picking up and dropping off their children.
They have seen too many people stay at home because wheelchairs are difficult to operate. So the design standards of this system have grown from real life: it needs to smoothly avoid obstacles on community roads, enable elderly people to quickly learn how to use it, and accompany users to bargain at vegetable markets and take walks in parks.
From the first prototype to the fifth, the team refined not only the system’s 0.5-second obstacle-avoidance response, but also its understanding of the people it was meant to serve. No matter how advanced a technology may be, if it cannot be fitted onto a standard wheelchair, if it is too expensive, or if it is too difficult to use, it remains nothing more than a collection of parts. Only when this lightweight kit truly helps people leave their homes and re-enter daily life does technology begin to carry real human value.

Stair-Climbing Wheels: When Innovation Responds to Everyday Life
The sight of elderly family members struggling to carry heavy items upstairs, and of delivery workers climbing staircases under heavy loads, left a lasting impression on a group of teenagers. These everyday moments, often dismissed as hardships people are simply expected to endure, inspired a project rooted in real life: Electric Stair-Climbing Wheels.
This project did not begin with abstract theory, nor was it a topic assembled merely for competition purposes. During their preliminary research, the students did not begin with literature reviews or data tables. Instead, they started by asking a more direct question: who would truly benefit from such a device? The 100 survey responses they collected offered an answer more compelling than any textbook. More than 60% of respondents frequently carry loads over 10 kilograms, 80% have struggled with staircases, and 75% said they would be willing to try a practical stair-climbing tool if one were available.
From the first generation to the fifth generation, the iterative path of this group of students did not go smoothly. The first generation was too brittle and bent easily when pressed; The third generation lacks strength, climbing stairs feels like climbing a slope; The fourth generation has confused themselves, with so many parts like building blocks. But they never thought about giving up - every failure is answering a question: how can this wheel really help those who need it?

Project: Intelligent Electric Skateboard for Campus and Research Park Mobility
队员:Lucas Lu、Yuvan
Team members: Lucas Lu, Yuvan
Students at Veritas Collegiate Academy (Shenzhen) turned their attention to two groups in particular: those rushing between classes on campus and researchers moving repeatedly between laboratories, workshops, and administrative buildings, often expending more physical energy on transit than on the work itself. Their goal was to design an electric skateboard that could make daily movement easier and more efficient.
From design and circuit soldering to coding and testing, the students completed the entire development process themselves. The resulting skateboard weighs 9.8 kilograms and can be carried with one hand when folded. It is controlled by a 2.4G remote, offers three speed settings, and responds in under 0.1 seconds, with a slower mode suited for elderly users and a faster mode designed for students in transit between classes. With a range of 22 kilometers and a full charging time of just two hours, it is well suited for use across both campus and community settings.
Without parameter stuffing, what they think is: time should be spent on creation, not on the road. This electric skateboard is not a blind pursuit of speed, but a rational reconstruction of spatial efficiency. It allows knowledge workers to think for an extra 17 minutes, reduces the need for researchers to catch their breath and pause, and brings campus life back to a calm rhythm.

When a typhoon approaches, coastal communities pull in their fishing nets and head home, while cities brace for warnings, work stoppages, and school closures. Over the past decades, tropical cyclones have claimed more than 700,000 lives. Faced with this reality, a student named Michael began to ask a different question: rather than simply predicting such storms, could there be a way to weaken them before they fully formed?
Michael built a three-dimensional model, worked through the physics of atmospheric systems, and calculated the theoretical energy requirements and necessary conditions for ideas such as injecting cold air and regulating central air pressure. Without access to a laboratory or a real storm, he turned to repeated computer simulations. As data filled the screen, the question driving his work remained deeply human: if a typhoon could be weakened, might those living along the coast finally sleep a little more peacefully?
The plan is still far away, far from practical application. They open up the data and code for more people to calculate together. Michael said that doing this project is not because it can be done, but because someone should do it.

Traffic congestion during rush hour, delayed school pick-ups, and bumpy journeys to the hospital for elderly family members are everyday frustrations that Beverly and Erica could not ignore. This led them to ask a bold question: if mobility on the ground is increasingly constrained, could the answer lie in the skies above?
The result was a public transportation drone system designed to accommodate 12 passengers and operate along fixed routes, cutting cross-district commuting time by half. It also features a fully automated battery-swapping station capable of replacing batteries in just two minutes, enabling service punctuality comparable to that of ground-based public transit. A foldable boarding ladder was designed for elderly passengers, while the cabin layout also allows sufficient space for adults traveling with children.
The routes were planned with satellite support, and both the code and design schematics were made open-source. As the team acknowledged, the concept remains far from real-world deployment—but what if, one day, aerial public transit does become reality? If that day comes, perhaps people will remember that the idea began with students who had simply grown tired of being trapped in traffic.
